My 4th Week at the station.

Labor Day Monday, but a radio station's airing doesn't stop. I got to the station at 8:00 AM. I was just in time for Paquito Jones and DJ Rob's SMART Spiel. It was very funny because it made Paquito seem gay. They also launched the new SMART ALL TEXT 10 commercial which was done in, technically, 4 languages (English, Tagalog, Visayan, Gay Lingo). Everything was going fine, until around 4:00 pm. it was time for Jumbo Joe's program, which is mostly populated by beer and cigarette commercials. when Jumbo introduced the Beer na Beer sponsored song, the song that played was Ang Ganda Ko by SANDARA PARK. This was because the commercial didn't come canned, it was mostly done by AOB (Announcer on board). The DJ just follows the playlist done by the programmer, not their own playlist. Now I know that if a station has commercials and song sponsorships done through AOB, one must check the commercial traffic log before making a playlist.

Wednesday was very exciting because we met Mano-Mano, a new funk-pop music group. Unfortuntely...I FORGOT MY CAMERA!!!! The group's lead singer wrote all the songs on their album. They have been around for more than 5 years, performing in bars in their home town Cebu. I can see how tough it really is in the Music world. If you don't have the guts and belief in yourself, you won't achieve anything.

This is my 3rd week at the station. Today my supervisor told me that I would have to do a comparative study of 4 competing stations.

  1. DWRR 101.9
  2. Yes FM 101.1
  3. Love Radio 90.7
  4. iFM 93.9

These stations are the top 4 stations that are competing for the same market. I would have to do a 2 week study on the similarities and differences of these 4. I would be returning to the station by the 1st of May.

Well, its my second week at work and I officially have 56 hours finished for my broadcast practicum. So far my week has been very eventful and I learned alot of things from just 2 weeks of working.

Monday...

My day started normal enough except for the fact that DJ Rob wasn't the DJ on board. It turns out that its his day off during mondays. The day still went wonderful because I got to meet DJ Pretty Rickee Kulit. I was actually surprised to see her because I know that her shift was from 12:00 MN to 5:00 AM. I had lots of fun when She was on because she was very hyper that day. After DJ Reekee the next DJ was Paquito Jones. Its actually very funny because they were all hyper. Too much coffee I guess, they have been on board since the night before. After them was my supervisor DJ Bernie but she didn't require me to go to the booth because it was already lunch time. at 4:00 PM it was DJ Jumbo Joe's time to be on air. He's a funny guy...in a serious kind of way. He has this really deep voice that makes him the usual voice talent on many station IDs of iFM and DZXL. Sir Joe made me a part of the program in a way I didn't expect. they have this promotion for SMART that includes a script to be followed by the DJs in a conversational manner as a sort of seguey/segway into the next part of the program. Since the time of the "advertisement" was within the program time, he didn't have a female DJ to have the conversation with so...I was on air at exactly 6:00 PM that night. What a very eventful day...

Sunday...

Yup, I went to work today for two very important reasons. One is because I wouldn't be able to go to work tomorrow because I have to work a 6 hour sanction at the ADAA, and two, it is Lyan's birthday today. She celebrated her birthday at the station so I really had to go to work. Lyan left the station at around 6:00 pm that night. The DJ on board then was DJ Rickee. Her board work was from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. The next DJ was Macho Palito. He's a cool guy! yes, he's even cooler than DJ Rob. DJ Rickee and DJ Macho Palito are the people Lyan and I consider as "Barkada". Well, Macho Palito considers himself a "ROCKER" and he sure has the attitude of one, it just doesn't show much on his appearance.

I had lots of fun this week, I hope that things would get even more active in the coming weeks.

3rd day at work..^^ I'm so happy today. as usual, I was the first practicumer at work so I found it in myself to work at the radio booth, since the DJ was getting alot of calls that day. After a few minutes, I worked in the office to research again.

So far this has been the most wonderful day yet. Ms. Bernie gave me two free tickets to a Parokya ni Edgar concert and had me check iFM's sponsorship in the said event. Its really fun!

Its my 2nd day at work. I got to the radio sation at 8:30 am, and I was assigned to work in the radio booth. The DJ on board was "Lover Boy" DJ Rob. He's a cool guy. He then explained to me how their work is done. He explained to me how the console works, what software they use in playing and lining up the music. I got to go on air for the time check, traffic update and even greeting the callers.

The ambiance in the workplace is surprisingly very light. The DJs would usually joke around even if they are on air. They even allow other DJs to come in and play around in the booth. After a while I got to get into the business, well sort of business part of radio life. I computed the air time for all commercials according to the contract time and actual time. Sometimes they are either overtime or undertime with the airings of the commercials. The DJs usually have around 10 to 15 seconds for their entire spiel not counting the greetings and updates.

I went home at 6:00 pm via MRT3. I love working at in iFM. Hoping for another productive day tomorrow..^^

At exactly 1:00 pm I finally started working at iFM 93.9, a radio station located at Edsa, Guadalupe. The moment I got accepted, my supervisor DJ Bernie introduced me to Sir Van Omega, the station manager and assigned me to work with DJ Soy. He assigned me to research on the artists that are included in the Top 40 list.

Well, yes it is clerical in a way, but I found it interesting and fun that I now memorize all the gig schedules of all the artists in the Top 40 list. I'm hoping for a more productive day tomorrow.
